Langston's first day of daycare was Jan. 26, 2009. It is really a great story. Eugene and I had just been discussing how Langston was changing, becoming more active and trying to crawl. He was rolling all over the place and just into everything. We'd also discussed how Gene's office had moved and now his morning drop off of Langston to his first sitter was taking Gene way out of his way and in the other direction from work. That same evening the phone rang and it was the childcare center with which I had registered back in the spring before the baby was born. (I had put Langston on the waitlist under "Brown Baby!") When the center called, they told me that had a spot in the infant room (of which there are only 11) for the exact 4 weekdays we needed.
I was astounded - we both were. Once again the Lord had provided. We are so blessed! I love this center and they love Langston. It is a good fit for us and they have a slew of procedures and regulations which I really appreciate. Of course, the 2nd day there, Langston got scratched by another baby and Gene was ready to pull him out, but I told him - is the kid never going to go to school or be around other kids? The scratch was minor and not malicious - one of the other students was trying to get at Langston's pacifier - can I help it if my kid is the envy of the other children? OK, it wasn't anything that obnoxious. Langston's pacifier was clipped to him via this multicolor paci clip and I think the other kid was just intrigued.
I think Gene's "outrage" is what allowed me to not be annoyed and to see the humor - you know, good cop, bad cop. I was so in love with the process of it all. They called us at work within 10 minutes of the occurrence. there were reports and outlines of the "incident" that I had to sign - I love it, makes me feel like they are going to take whatever precautions necessary (I mean, no one wants to make that phone call) and then when/if something happens, there is a procedure in place to deal with it.
Langston turned 8 months old the day after he started daycare. He's getting into everything - he's military crawling around the house, reaching for anything, wanting to eat everything in sight and just generally being a happy baby! So, again, the timing was great!
